a Stand (draft)

The man across the street must use
the chain link fence he sleeps beside
in order to stand:
he heaves himself up half a joint
at a time -- half a knee a knee
again twice a shoulder and again
a shoulder, twice; an elbow and elbow
again; the neck doesn't bend, or
the back, but certainly his fingers
do, can't not; in claw shapes
they scrape up the fence to
a stand, gripping, just as
in sleep they're gestured.
